Portuguese passport is among the 30 best in the world

Led by Sweden, a list compiled by consultancy Global Citizen Solutions (GCS) evaluates 200 countries and their passports based on three pillars: mobility, quality of life, and investment, according to a statement released today.

Under these criteria, Portugal ranks 28th in the global ranking, four places below the previous list.

The Portuguese passport offers visa-free access to 124 countries and is considered one of the most desirable in the world, with high scores in mobility and quality of life, GCS notes.

According to the consultancy, the Portuguese passport is the 13th best globally in terms of mobility and quality of life but ranks only 60th for investors.

Holders of the Portuguese passport have visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to countries including the United States, Germany, France, China, Japan, Andorra, Austria, and Belgium, enabling nearly instant worldwide travel.

However, Portuguese passport holders require a visa to enter about 13 destinations worldwide, such as Afghanistan, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, Algeria, Eritrea, Ghana, and Liberia.

Europe occupies nine of the top ten positions on the list in 2025, while the United States has experienced a historic decline, dropping thirteen places (from 1st to 14th) over the past four years.

The decline is attributed to political polarization and increasingly restrictive immigration policies.
