The Portuguese artist Eduardo Batarda has died at the age of 81, as jointly announced by the Miguel Nabinho Gallery and the Pedro Oliveira Gallery.
“It is with profound sadness that the family, Miguel Nabinho Gallery, and Pedro Oliveira Gallery announce the passing of Eduardo Batarda (1943–2025) following a long illness,” stated a note released on Instagram.
Eduardo Batarda passed away today in Lisbon after suffering from a degenerative disease.
Regarded as a “major figure in contemporary Portuguese art,” the galleries highlighted his “deeply personal painting, marked by irony, formal freedom, and intellectual density, capable of intersecting literary, musical, and visual references.”
Gallery owner Pedro Oliveira described Eduardo Batarda to the Lusa agency as a significant artist not only of his generation but also for those that followed, particularly due to his work as a professor at the Porto Fine Arts.
“He had many students who are excellent artists today, and he left a very relevant mark on the younger generations. He had highly significant work. In recent years, he worked little because he was already very ill,” remarked the gallerist, noting that Batarda achieved the status of a “master” while also praising his intellectual capability beyond visual arts.
