Moments before white smoke emerged from the chimney (shortly after 5:00 PM in Portugal), onlookers in the square noted the seagulls perched near the chimney, including a chick, an image also broadcast globally by television networks.
“There is a new seagull, there will be a new Pope,” was heard in English seconds before the white smoke signaled the election of a new Pope.
Fernando Lopes, a priest from the Diocese of Évora studying in Rome, described this as “one of the most important moments” of his life.
He explained that the election represents “a symbol for the Church and the World and someone who builds bridges.”
The future Pope, the successor of Francis, will be “the one who leads us into the future,” added the 47-year-old clergyman.
“It is emotional and a pride to be here in Rome witnessing this,” he continued.
António Estêvão, the rector of the Pontifical Portuguese College, also expressed his emotion at experiencing this moment.
Currently, the rooms of three cardinals—Américo Aguiar, António Marto, and Manuel Clemente—are secured in his residence during the days leading up to the conclave.
He reflected, “A week ago, I was here in pride and gratitude for Pope Francis, and now I am here with joy for the election of his successor.”
Laivo Francisco, 34, was in the square wearing a scarf from Angola. As a student from that country at the college, he shared his happiness.
“It’s a unique experience. Being here to study is already great, but being here to witness a papal election is a singular moment I will never forget,” he said, hoping that the new Pope “continues to help the Church grow.”
In the square, the enthusiasm is palpable as the new Pope is chosen. More people are gathering, some having left the Basilica, eagerly awaiting the announcement of the new Pope’s name.
