The Constitutional Court has rejected the appeal filed by the Partido Popular Monárquico (PPM) against the use of the acronym ‘AD’ by the PSD/CDS coalition.
As stated in the Constitutional Court’s decision, the PSD and CDS are authorized to use the designation ‘AD – Coligação PSD/CDS’ in the legislative elections on May 18.
The court’s ruling indicated that the decision was unanimous among the judges, noting that the “strongest identifying feature” of the coalition among the three parties would be ‘Aliança Democrática’, words that have been omitted, leaving only the acronyms followed by the coalition’s composition – ‘AD – Coligação PSD/CDS-PP’.
“Based on the above, it is decided to deny the appeal and, consequently, to uphold Decision No. 300/2025,” the ruling stated.
The PPM had appealed to the Constitutional Court’s plenary session last Friday, challenging the decision which approved the designation ‘AD – Coligação PSD/CDS’, arguing that the decision lacks justification.

“Given the need to justify the decision on all matters that are relevant and controversial, it was mandatory to justify the non-confusability of the name in question,” the document reads.
Despite the PPM’s arguments, the Constitutional Court decided to “deny the appeal and, consequently, uphold the ruling.”
It is noteworthy that, in a recent interview, the secretary-general of the monarchist party emphasized that the decision was.
