The head of state, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, marked the 30-year anniversary of this intelligence service with a statement published on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic.
In this announcement, “the President of the Republic highlights the importance of the information services in safeguarding the independence and external security of the Portuguese state,” the statement reads.
According to the President, over the past 30 years “SIED has proven to be an essential state service for protecting national interests and all our fellow citizens who live beyond Portugal’s physical borders.”
Initially named the Service of Strategic Defense and Military Information (SIEDM), this service was established by a decree-law in 1995, as part of the Portuguese Republic’s Information System (SIRP).
A week ago, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro appointed Manuel António da Silva Vieira as the new director of SIED.
A source from the office of the PSD/CDS-PP coalition government indicated that the name of the new director had already been communicated to the Assembly of the Republic for future hearings.
Manuel António da Silva Vieira was the deputy secretary-general of the Internal Security System from August 2024 to March 2025. He will replace José Pedro Marinho da Costa as the director of SIED, who was appointed to this position in September 2023.
