A pregnant woman gave birth in a Leiria Fire Department ambulance on Highway 1, between Soure and Condeixa, while being transported to Bissaya Barreto Maternity in Coimbra.
The Leiria firefighters reported, “Alerted to a labor situation at 8:30 PM on May 24, clinical data was passed to the CODU – Centers of Urgent Patient Guidance – in Coimbra. Due to the closure of the Gynecology/Obstetrics Emergency at Leiria Hospital, redirection to Bissaya Barreto Maternity was determined,” as stated on their Facebook page.
They further explained that during the journey, “on the A1 section between Soure and Condeixa, at km 176, the expulsive stage began.”
“A new communication with the CODU was made, organizing a ‘rendez-vous’ with the Coimbra Medical Emergency and Resuscitation Vehicle (VMER), which ensured accompaniment until arrival at the maternity,” the report reads.
