
In São Jorge, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is set to be inducted as an honorary member of the São Jorge Cheese Guild, one of the archipelago’s most renowned products, during a ceremony in Velas.
Subsequently, the President of Portugal will proceed to the island of Santa Maria, an addition to the itinerary announced on Saturday. The program will focus on technology, the Portuguese space sector’s infrastructure, and maritime matters.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is scheduled to visit the Teleporto, the REAGE station – Atlântic Network of Geodynamic and Spatial Stations, and the island’s fishing port.
With the Santa Maria visit, the President wraps up his official tour of the Azores, covering seven out of the nine islands in the archipelago: Terceira, Pico, Faial, Graciosa, São Miguel, São Jorge, and Santa Maria.
During his visit, the President urged the government to further define the national maritime strategy, emphasizing the sector’s significance for the country’s future.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also advocated for the expansion of the continental shelf and remarked that “now is the time” to move forward with a revision of the Law of Finances for the Autonomous Regions.
The President of the Regional Government of the Azores praised the President’s presence and expressed his hope that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will return “as soon as possible” before his term ends.
