In a letter addressed to the President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, the head of state announced a scheduled visit to Egypt from October 31 to November 2, upon the invitation of his counterpart, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
In another correspondence, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa informed about a planned state visit to Monaco between November 20 and 21, at the invitation of Prince Albert II.
These trips, pending parliamentary approval, have already been debated and voted on in the Foreign Affairs Committee. The visit to Monaco received unanimous support from PSD, Chega, PS, IL, and Livre, while the official visit to Egypt was approved with Chega abstaining, as reported by the Assembly’s portal.
Between these two visits, the President of the Republic is set to travel to Luanda from November 10 to 12 to participate in the celebrations marking Angola’s 50th anniversary of independence. This trip has been unanimously approved by the plenary session.
The visits to Monaco, Angola, and Egypt come as the second term of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa nears its end, with his tenure concluding in less than five months on March 9 next year.
The head of state has indicated his intention to schedule the presidential elections for January 18. If confirmed, the official campaign will commence on January 4, with a potential second round, legally occurring three weeks after the first, set for February 8.
The Assembly’s approval of the head of state’s trips is a constitutional formality, stipulating that the President cannot leave national territory without parliamentary consent.
