President of the Republic meets IL and Livre on Wednesday

The official website of the Presidency announced that President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will meet with the Liberal Initiative (IL) at 11:30 a.m. and Livre at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, following discussions with the PSD, PS, and Chega.

Additional meetings are needed with the five other parties that secured parliamentary representation: PCP, CDS-PP, BE, PAN, and JPP.

The PCP announced this afternoon its intention to present a motion in parliament opposing the government’s program.

As per Article 187, paragraph 1 of the Constitution, “the Prime Minister is appointed by the President of the Republic after consulting the parties represented in the Assembly of the Republic, taking into account the election results.”

The AD (PSD/CDS-PP), led by current Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, won the early parliamentary elections held on Sunday with over 32% of the vote, though without securing an absolute majority. The coalition garnered 89 seats in parliament, with 87 from the PSD and two from the CDS-PP, accounting for more than a third of the 230 parliamentary seats yet falling short of an absolute majority.

With votes from expatriate constituencies still to be counted, which account for four seats, the PS emerged as the second most-voted party with 23.38% and 58 seats, tied with Chega, which received fewer votes at 22.56%.

Provisional results from the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Internal Administration place IL in fourth with 5.53% of the votes and nine deputies, followed by Livre with 4.2% and six elected representatives.

The CDU (PCP/PEV) secured 3.03% of the vote and elected three deputies, all from the PCP. BE and PAN each elected one deputy with 2% and 1.36% of the vote, respectively, as did JPP from Madeira, which got 0.34% of the national vote.
