A meeting with the new socialist leader was announced today on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic.
José Luís Carneiro, who has previously held positions including Mayor of Baião, Minister of Internal Administration, and Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities in socialist governments led by António Costa, was elected today as the Secretary-General of the PS, running unopposed.
In the latest update on the results of the PS direct elections, which concluded today with 92% of the votes counted, José Luís Carneiro secured approximately 95.4% of the votes, with a participation rate of 48.3%.
Today, José Luís Carneiro announced that “at the end of August, beginning of September,” the PS will “hold a Municipal Convention” for the “candidates to commit themselves to the values of freedom, equality, and solidarity.”

The new Secretary-General of the Socialist Party promised a “different approach,” distancing himself from conservatives and populists. “I aim to be a balanced person. I am well aware that, even in politics, an unreflected life or choice is neither a life nor a choice lived,” he stated.
