President of the STJ says action for reform in the judiciary has been little.

Speaking to the press after a meeting that gathered key justice stakeholders to present proposals for judicial reform, João Cura Mariano highlighted the importance of dialogue, stating that “many of the necessary reforms in the justice sector must be undertaken by the Assembly of the Republic or the Government.”

“It was useful to come together, and this can create some synergy toward action, which is what has been missing,” João Cura Mariano remarked. “We have talked a lot but acted little,” he added.

Regarding the proposals put forward, the president of the Supreme Court of Justice emphasized modernization and digitalization in the justice system, pointing out the existence of “very outdated systems,” financial autonomy, and revisions of procedural laws.

This meeting was an initiative by the president of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, and the president of the Supreme Court of Justice, João Cura Mariano, and was announced by the parliamentary president last January during the opening of the judicial year.

Among the attendees were the presidents of the Supreme Court of Justice, João Cura Mariano, and the Supreme Administrative Court, counselor judge Pedro Vergueiro, the Attorney General, Amadeu Guerra, the deputy ombudsperson, Estrela Chaby, as well as the heads of the Bar Association, João Massano, the Chamber of Solicitors and Enforcement Agents, Anabela Veloso, and the Notaries Association Jorge Batista da Silva.
