President still unsure about participation in the CPLP summit in Guinea-Bissau

“If I understand that what is going to be addressed, by the terms in which it will be addressed, is a step forward for the CPLP, I will attend. If I believe it is not, and that my presence is not positive, I will not go,” stated Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, when questioned by journalists on the sidelines of the 50th-anniversary celebrations of the Diocese of Santarém.

The Portuguese President promises to decide whether he will attend the summit in Bissau on Thursday, the day before the meeting begins.

The 15th CPLP Summit will take place on Friday in the capital of Guinea-Bissau, which will assume the presidency of the organization for two years, succeeding São Tomé and Príncipe.

The meeting of Heads of State and Government and the Council of Ministers, which brings together the heads of diplomacy on Thursday, was preceded by a meeting of the focal points of the Food Security Council and also involved the Permanent Concertation Committee at the ambassadorial level.

Portugal’s Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, will participate in the Council of Ministers meeting on Thursday.

The theme chosen for this summit is “The CPLP and Food Sovereignty: A Pathway to Sustainable Development.”

Founded in 1996, the CPLP consists of nine countries – Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Timor-Leste.
