The Secretary-General of the PS asserted today that the party’s priority remains the municipal elections, refuting the notion that a potential presidential candidacy announcement by Santos Silva would hasten a decision on socialist support.
When questioned by journalists in Brussels regarding a possible presidential candidacy announcement from former President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva, José Luís Carneiro requested patience for “the reflection and the communication that will follow this reflection.”
Facing repeated inquiries, the new socialist secretary-general emphasized that the PS’s priority is the municipal elections at the end of the year. Only after these elections will the PS address the possibility of supporting a presidential candidacy: “This is a matter that will be analyzed and decided upon after the municipal elections.”
“Presidential candidacies are acts of individual citizenship, and we must respect the timing, manner, and decision of those aspiring to this significant and relevant role,” stated José Luís Carneiro.
