Presidential: Marcelo considers voting early on the island of Corvo

Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa discussed the possibility of traveling to Corvo Island to cast an early vote, as he addressed journalists during his visit to the Diplomatic Bazaar in Lisbon. This move is being considered due to his previous inability to reach Corvo because of weather conditions.

Rebelo de Sousa, who previously visited Flores but could not make it to Corvo, said, “I’m considering when it would be possible,” emphasizing his interest in conducting the trip to participate in early voting the Sunday before the presidential elections scheduled for January 18.

He stated, “We need to see if it is possible during that time, which is a week prior. I have to check if it is legally feasible. There has to be early voting available in Corvo,” reiterating his desire to vote early on the island.

If realized, his visit to Corvo in January will be coordinated with the Regional Government and regional authorities, including the Representative of the Republic and the President of the Regional Legislative Assembly.

Discussing his final international trips, Rebelo de Sousa mentioned upcoming visits to Spain and the Holy See. Additionally, he has plans to join Spain’s king at the European Parliament to celebrate 40 years since joining the European Communities.

In the course of his two-hour visit to the International Bazaar of the Diplomatic Corps, where the President customarily visited stands of participating countries, he brought up the upcoming visit of Mozambique’s President, Daniel Chapo, to Portugal in December for a Portuguese-Mozambican summit in Porto.

“I will be there coincidentally at the Serralves Foundation Founders’ Meeting. There might be a chance to cross paths [with him],” he noted.

Additionally, the President mentioned an invitation extended by Portugal’s Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, to Brazil’s President Lula da Silva for a visit in April next year, stating, “The invitation has been made for next April. It will be with my successor.”

Speaking about potential parliamentary decrees regarding nationality, the President commented that he had not yet reviewed them and intends to examine “the foundation” of the preventive assessment request that the PS parliamentary group will submit to the Constitutional Court.
