A 31-year-old man was arrested by the Public Security Police (PSP) on October 13 in Oeiras, for alleged domestic violence, under a warrant issued by the Judicial Authority.
The PSP stated that “the investigation pertains to a relationship that began in January 2020 and ended in August 2025, during which the suspect and the victim lived together, and have a two-year-old daughter, currently under the mother’s care.”
According to the PSP, “throughout the relationship, the suspect exhibited aggressive behavior, controlling the victim’s social interactions, particularly with males, and resorting to physical and verbal abuse whenever he expressed unfounded jealousy.”
The reported incidents include several physical assaults, such as neck grabs and shoving, which have been occurring since 2021,” the statement noted.
One incident highlighted involved the suspect, under the influence of alcohol, forcefully grabbing the victim’s neck and damaging her mobile phone by throwing it to the ground. On another occasion, during the New Year transition from 2022 to 2023, he again assaulted the victim, grabbing her neck and arms, while also breaking down the door of the residence after she temporarily left.
The PSP revealed that the suspect’s behavior “escalated” in August 2025, issuing death threats to the victim, stating, “I could go to prison, but I’ll kill you first.” He is also alleged to have expressed intent to acquire a firearm, increasing the victim’s fear and terror.
“Days later, he physically assaulted her again, attempting to suffocate her, and threatened her with a kitchen knife, which he held to her abdomen,” the statement disclosed.
Although the suspect was subject to a restraining order and prohibited from contact, he continued “to violate these orders, making multiple calls and sending messages to the victim, and attempting personal contact at her workplace and residence, on different dates in September of this year.”
“Such persistent behavior, even after judicial intervention, demonstrates a persecutory attitude and complete disregard for authority decisions, maintaining the victim in a constant state of fear and insecurity to the extent of considering leaving the country for her safety and that of her young daughter,” the statement read.
Given the “severity of the facts, the risk of continued criminal activity, and the need to safeguard the physical and psychological integrity of the victim, a warrant for arrest outside of hot pursuit was issued,” which was executed on October 13, resulting in the suspect’s arrest.
The detainee was brought before the Judicial Authority for a first judicial interrogation, where preventive detention was ordered.
