Two foreign nationals, aged 42 and 55, were taken into custody near Pomarão, Mértola in Beja district, having been found with 786 kilograms of hashish. They appeared today for their initial judicial hearing at the Beja Court.
The court imposed the harshest precautionary measure, and the men have been remanded to Beja Prison to await further proceedings.
The Beja Territorial Command of the National Republican Guard (GNR) announced on Tuesday that their officers, during surveillance operations along the riverside area, observed “suspicious activity,” prompting them to approach the occupants of a vessel.
A “summary search” of the boat uncovered 786 kilograms of hashish, equating to over 1.5 million doses, which were subsequently seized.
In addition to the drugs, the GNR reported confiscating three mobile phones, a laptop, a tablet, various communication equipment, and the boat itself.
This operation was executed by the Almodôvar Territorial Detachment of the GNR, with support from the Beja Technical Support Unit, along with additional aid from the Moura Territorial Detachment and the Almodôvar Criminal Investigation Unit.
