A statement from the PSP indicates that an incident of alleged domestic violence took place on Wednesday, prompting the dispatch of a patrol to the scene.
The communication specifies that it was the couple’s children, aged nine and 20, who managed to stop their father from continuing to assault their mother.
Subsequently, in the presence of neighbors who attempted to aid the victim, the suspect reportedly approached the woman wielding an 18-centimeter kitchen knife, threatening her life. This attempt was thwarted by those present, according to the Leiria District Command.
Upon arrival, the PSP patrol found the 47-year-old woman with injuries to her face, head, and right shoulder, “allegedly inflicted by her own husband.”
The police noted in the statement that communication with those involved was challenging due to a language barrier, necessitating reliance on witnesses to understand the situation’s details.
The PSP ensured “the protection of the victim and her children by removing the aggressor from the residence,” though the statement does not explain why the suspect’s arrest occurred on Friday, two days post-incident, mentioning only a “swift and thorough investigation” that led to the issuing of an arrest warrant outside of a crime-in-progress scenario.
Following his arrest on Friday, the suspect was placed under preventive detention as a precautionary measure on Saturday.
The District Command emphasizes that the case was handled “with the required promptness and in coordination with the judicial authorities.”
