Preventive detention for a suspect of assaulting a woman in the Azores

A man has been detained in the Azores on Tuesday following an investigation by the Proximity and Victim Support Team of the Ribeira Grande Police Station in São Miguel, which identified a potential situation of domestic violence involving the suspect, according to the Regional Command of the Azores Public Security Police (PSP).

After conducting “a series of investigative procedures to gather evidence,” the PSP found “strong indications of violent and serious conduct” by the accused towards his wife, the police stated in a report.

The PSP further noted that the suspect possessed “an illegal firearm, which he threatened to use against his family.”

Considering “the worsening criminal behavior demonstrated by the suspect over the past few weeks,” characterized by “physical assaults and threats,” the man was arrested “outside of flagrante delicto” to “prevent the commission of further crimes,” the PSP detailed.

The individual is “strongly suspected of committing a crime of domestic violence” and, after a judicial interrogation at the Ponta Delgada Court, he was subjected to “the coercive measure of preventive detention,” the police force added.

The Regional Command of the Azores emphasized the significance of the suspect’s detention, considering the “danger he posed to his family.”
