The Évora Regional Prosecutor’s Office has announced that a man was detained on Thursday on charges of aggravated domestic violence against his former girlfriend, aged 48.
The Prosecutor’s Office reports that during their relationship, which lasted from March to May this year, the man mistreated the victim through physical and psychological abuse, including sexual mistreatment.
Following their breakup, the suspect engaged in intense harassment of the victim, attempting to coerce her into resuming the relationship. This led the woman to flee her home with her three children, aged 7, 11, and 13, the office highlighted.
The Prosecutor’s Office noted that incidents of violence increased in intensity and frequency since May, resulting in the man’s arrest last Thursday.
He had already been convicted by the Évora Court on October 29 this year, in a case where another woman was the victim. He was sentenced to two years and two months in prison, with the sentence suspended on the condition that he undergo probation aimed at developing emotional control and handling adversity and frustration.
After his arrest, which was not in the act of committing a crime, the man was presented for his first judicial interrogation last Friday. The criminal instruction judge ordered his preventive detention.
Investigations are ongoing under the direction of the 2nd specialized section of the Évora Department of Investigation and Penal Action (DIAP), with the assistance of the GNR’s Specific Victim Support Investigation Unit in Évora.
