The Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) detained a 49-year-old man in Cascais on December 7 on suspicion of domestic violence.
“Throughout the relationship, the suspect showed emotional instability and aggressive behavior towards the victim, displaying excessive jealousy, controlling all content on her mobile phone, accusing her of having sexual relations with other people, and frequently insulting her,” stated the police in a press release.
The suspect allegedly assaulted his then-girlfriend, a 42-year-old woman, with whom he had a three-year relationship.
The authorities begin recounting the events from September 27 when, around 12:30 a.m., the suspect began accusing his girlfriend of cheating with other men. “Faced with this scenario, the victim decided to leave the residence,” but the man prevented her by grabbing her.
“The suspect, on top of the victim, applied force on her arms to prevent her from leaving, eventually causing her to break free and leave the location,” the report continued, adding that the woman left without her phone.
The suspect refused to return the device, using it to invade the woman’s privacy without her consent, accessing her email and social media, “sending her intimate photos to third parties and sharing them on her social network.”
At the beginning of the subsequent month, on October 6, “the suspect sent an email to the victim insulting her and stating that she should run away because he was going to kill her.”
Weeks later, the man surprised the woman as she took out the trash, starting to insult her in public and ended up “slapping her face.” The incident, which happened on October 29, only ended when the victim picked up her phone to call the police.
In November, on the 4th and 22nd, the man “followed the victim from her home to her workplace, going as far as addressing her in public and loudly insulting her with the clear intent to humiliate” the woman. In one of these incidents, the suspect even “accelerated his car towards the victim,” as if to run her over, while continuing to insult her.
On December 8, the detainee was brought before the competent judicial authority, which decided to apply the most severe coercive measure to the man: pretrial detention.
