A 40-year-old man who pursued his ex-partner and their minor children by car in Olivais, Lisbon, over the weekend, will remain in preventive detention.
The man was brought before the judicial authority on Wednesday for the application of coercive measures. It is noted that he had already been prohibited from approaching the ex-partner.
The chase was recorded and widely shared on social media. The footage shows a car chasing another, with its rear bumper dragging on the ground.
Victim Had Previously Reported Suspect for Domestic Violence
At one point, the pursuing vehicle hits the back of the front car, causing it to veer off course. Screams can be heard. The suspect exits his car and punches the victim’s car window multiple times. The victim eventually manages to accelerate and flee the scene.
In a statement released on Tuesday, December 2, the Public Security Police (PSP) revealed that the woman had already reported the ex-companion for domestic violence and had a panic button, which she activated when she saw the suspect outside her home.
“The victim saw the suspect at her home’s doorstep when she was reaching her residence in her vehicle, prompting her to immediately press the panic button to request help. Fearing her ex-companion, the victim did not stop at her home and was pursued by the suspect on the public road, where he repeatedly tried to intercept the vehicle carrying the victim and two minors,” the PSP explained.
The security force highlighted that captured footage made it clear “when the victim’s vehicle was momentarily immobilized, the suspect exited his car and delivered multiple punches at the passenger window in an attempt to assault the car occupants.”
Minors Injured in Incident
Due to the “multiple collisions between the vehicles,” the minors needed “medical assistance,” according to the same note, as they suffered various “injuries resulting from the incident’s violence.”
The PSP also emphasized that the video filmed by a “citizen and published on social media” was “important for identifying the suspect.”
