Preventive detention for suspect of resistance and coercion against PSP agents

A man has been detained in Évora, Portugal, accused of several offenses, as announced by the Regional Attorney General’s Office of Évora. The individual was caught “in the act” and is “strongly suspected of committing the crimes of resistance and coercion against law enforcement, possession of a prohibited weapon, qualified insults, and aggravated threats.” The victims of these alleged crimes include two PSP officers and the civilian who requested police assistance at the scene.

The Public Prosecutor reported that the suspect was presented for an initial judicial interrogation today.

The incidents reportedly took place on Saturday afternoon in Évora.

“There is strong evidence indicating that the suspect, who was harassing a civilian in public and made death threats, used physical and verbal violence against two PSP officers upon their arrival. The suspect even attempted to use a knife he had in his vehicle,” the Public Prosecutor’s statement elaborated.

As a result of the assaults, one of the police officers “sustained minor injuries” and required treatment at a hospital, according to the statement.

Additionally, after the interrogation was conducted and “the evident risks of continued criminal activity, interference with the investigation, and disruption of public order and tranquility were recognized, the Public Prosecutor applied for the suspect to be held in preventive detention, a request granted by the criminal investigation judge.”

The investigation is ongoing under the supervision of the Évora Department of Investigation and Penal Action (DIAP) (1st specialized section) with the support of PSP.
