According to the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR), the arrest was conducted by the Territorial Post of Souselas, in the municipality of Coimbra, last Thursday.
“Following a report of gunfire in the public street, the Guard’s officers proceeded to the location where they carried out inquiries that revealed the suspect had threatened his 18-year-old son with a firearm, with which he fired shots in the street,” it was described.
During the police proceedings, GNR established that the suspect’s partner, a 46-year-old woman, and two other minor children were present at the scene.
“The operation resulted in the arrest of the suspect and the seizure of a firearm and various ammunition,” it added.
The action was supported by the Investigation and Support Center for Specific Victims (NIAVE) and the Intervention Detachment of the Coimbra Territorial Command.
According to GNR, the 44-year-old man was presented for his first judicial interrogation at the Coimbra Court, where preventive detention was ordered as a coercive measure.
In a press release sent to the Lusa agency, GNR further emphasized that domestic violence is a public crime and reporting it is a collective responsibility.
“If you need help or are aware of any domestic violence situation, report it: on the Electronic Complaint Portal; by phone, through the European emergency number 112; at the nearest GNR Post to your residence, keeping our contacts always at hand; on the App MAI112 available and intended exclusively for deaf citizens; and on the SMS Security app, aimed at deaf people,” it highlighted.
