A 51-year-old man has been arrested by the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) on suspicion of committing arson in a residential building in Pampilhosa da Serra. He has been placed in preventive detention.
The PJ, in an official statement, clarified that the suspect allegedly “set fire to bedclothes in one of the rooms of the house he shared with his brother, with whom he had familial disputes.”
The statement further noted, “Alerted by the smoke from the progressing fire, the victim, the author’s brother, notified the firefighters and attempted to prevent the fire from spreading to the rest of the building, which he successfully achieved.”
After being informed by the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR), the PJ carried out “investigative procedures,” gathering substantial evidence that led to the suspect’s arrest.
The suspect, who has a previous police record for the crime of forest arson using direct flames, has already appeared before a magistrate for the initial interrogation and has been assigned the preventive detention measure.
