A man in the Azores has been charged with allegedly committing “in material authorship and effective competition, a crime of child pornography and nine crimes of sexual abuse of a minor dependent or in a particular situation of vulnerability,” as stated on the website of the Prosecutor’s Office of the Azores District.
The incidents occurred between October 2024 and January 7, 2025, in the municipality of Horta, in the Central Group of the Azores. Many of these incidents reportedly took place inside the school the minor attended, where the accused was teaching.
The suspect was brought before a judicial inquiry on Thursday, and the criminal instruction judge imposed the coercive measures of preventive detention, suspension from the teaching profession, and any educational activity involving minors. These measures were deemed necessary due to the potential risk of continued criminal activity and the disruption of public order and tranquility, according to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The case continues to be investigated under the direction of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Horta, part of the Department of Investigation and Penal Action (DIAP) of the Azores District, with assistance from the Criminal Investigation Department of the Azores’ Judiciary Police.
