This week, DECO PROteste also released a survey in which four out of ten respondents revealed difficulty in paying supermarket bills. According to the consumer protection organization, “which has been monitoring the price of a basket containing 63 essential food items like meat, fish, fruits, vegetables, and eggs since 2022, prices continue to rise.”

“This basket, which cost 188 euros at the beginning of 2022, is now worth about 240 euros. In other words, food prices have increased by more than 25% over three years,” states a communicated message.

This pertains to a European survey conducted by DECO PROteste alongside its European counterparts, which also reveals “growing concern among consumers about sustainability in the food sector.”

Furthermore, “seven out of ten Portuguese respondents advocate for agricultural policies that promote practices that protect the environment and biodiversity, with 66% calling for European subsidies to favor farmers who adopt practices that respect the environment and animal welfare and face economic difficulties.”

The survey indicates that consumers demand “safer and more sustainable foods at affordable prices.”

“Many consumers are willing to pay more for foods produced on farms that respect the environment, animal welfare, and farmers, provided that European support ensures acceptable prices and credible sustainable practices,” a communicated message reveals.
