Price of water in Mozambique will decrease starting in June

Aura anuncia novas tarifas de água potável a partir de 2025.

“From June 2, 2025, new drinking water tariffs will be enacted, highlighting a reduction in the minimum domestic consumption and the introduction of preferential tariffs for schools, hospitals, and other social institutions,” Aura stated in a communiqué.

The reduction exceeds 30% nationwide, applicable to up to five cubic meters of monthly consumption.

The regulatory body emphasized that improving the quality and expanding the coverage of water supply services necessitate the implementation of balanced tariffs, a measure that reinforces “equity, efficiency, and service sustainability.”

“These tariffs must cover not only operational and investment costs but also ensure the accessibility of drinking water for the most vulnerable populations. This approach secures the economic sustainability of the system and advances towards universal access, promoting social equity,” the document further outlines.

Aura adjusted the tariffs downward based on four “fundamental pillars,” which include macroeconomic factors associated with the current service performance situation, the law providing for the exemption of Value Added Tax (VAT) for social tariff consumers and public entities, an increase in access to basic water supply services for everyone, and a stronger drive towards improving the operational efficiency of the services provided by companies.

“Thus, the new tariffs reflect both real economic conditions and the pursuit of efficiency, including access to the service for low-income populations,” the water regulatory authority noted.
