Prime Minister Luís Montenegro expressed deep regret over “the accident that occurred this afternoon at the Glória elevator,” stating that the government has been “monitoring the situation from the outset.”
“The government and the Prime Minister deeply regret the accident that happened this afternoon at the Glória elevator in Lisbon and express their profound sympathy and solidarity with the victims and their families,” read the statement sent to the newsrooms.
The statement added that “the government has been monitoring the situation from the first moments and the response from various public emergency services, health units, civil protection, security forces, and transportation, who have been given instructions to provide all necessary support.”
The government is also “in permanent contact and close cooperation with the City Council,” noting that the “immediate priority” is “rescuing the victims” and that “the competent authorities will in due course conduct necessary investigations to determine the causes of this regrettable accident.”
The Glória elevator, which connects Restauradores to Príncipe Real in Lisbon, derailed this afternoon, resulting in at least a dozen fatalities, as reported by Notícias ao Minuto.

Marcelo urges swift clarification of accident circumstances
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed regret over the accident involving the Glória elevator in Lisbon this Wednesday afternoon and stated, “he hopes the incident will be quickly clarified by the competent authorities.”
“The President of the Republic deeply regrets the accident that occurred this afternoon with the Glória elevator (funicular) in Lisbon, particularly the fatalities and severe injuries, as well as the several minor injuries,” read the note shared on the Presidency’s website.
