Prison guard suspected of introducing cell phones into Matosinhos prison to be tried in January

The trial involving a prison guard and five other defendants, including four inmates and the wife of one of them, is set to begin at 09:30 at the Matosinhos Court.

The first hearing, scheduled for a full day, will provide an opportunity for the six defendants to testify if they choose, according to a source.

The prison guard faces charges of two counts of passive corruption, while the other five defendants are charged with active corruption.

The indictment by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which was accessed by Lusa, alleges that in 2017, the prison guard smuggled mobile phones, SIM cards, cables, and on one occasion, drugs, into Custóias prison, where he worked.

These items were intended for the inmates, defendants in this case, to be sold to third parties.

The indictment indicates that these smuggling incidents occurred on three occasions, with the prison guard being intercepted by colleagues during the last attempt, in possession of mobile phones and drugs concealed in milk cartons.

The mobile phones and drugs were reportedly provided by the wife of one of the inmates, who is also a defendant.

According to the indictment, the woman allegedly left the package near one of the prison walls, and using lines along the fence, the prison guard picked it up.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office has requested the forfeiture of 700 euros, representing the alleged benefits paid and promised to the prison guard.

The charge of drug trafficking is being addressed in a separate case.
