A strike has been called by the National Union of the Prison Guard Corps (SNCGP) to demand payment for overtime and the standardization of service schedules for all prison guard personnel. This represents an escalation of the ongoing overtime strike.
According to a decision by the arbitration board accessed by Lusa, in addition to weekly visits and the delivery of clothing bags to inmates, the minimum services include the “weekly canteen” (access to food purchases) and the attendance of educational and training activities by prisoners.
Speaking to Lusa, the president of SNCGP stated that the decision poses no issues and welcomed the exclusion of minimum services for vineyard work at the prison facility, which is responsible for producing commercially sold and award-winning wines.
Frederico Morais emphasized that the presence of guards to ensure the security of the prison, located in the Lisbon district, should take precedence over overseeing vineyard work.
