
At around 11:00 PM, Rua Augusta was blocked in both directions as demonstrators gathered with Palestinian flags, the symbolic Palestinian Keffiyeh scarf, and placards.
The protesters chanted slogans such as “Free Palestine” and directed their chants against the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas. Present at the location were over 10 police officers.
The demonstrators also beat drums, which could be heard during the debate of the nine candidates for the Mayor of Lisbon, broadcast by RTP channel.
In the municipal elections on October 12, candidates for the presidency of the Lisbon City Hall include Alexandra Leitão (PS/Livre/BE/PAN), Carlos Moedas (PSD/CDS-PP/IL), João Ferreira (CDU-PCP/PEV), Bruno Mascarenhas (Chega), Ossanda Líber (Nova Direita), José Almeida (Volt), Adelaide Ferreira (ADN), Tomaz Ponce Dentinho (PPM/PTP), and Luís Mendes (RIR).
Between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM, more than 1,000 demonstrators demanded the release of Portuguese citizens detained on Wednesday by Israel, on humanitarian aid vessels from the Global Sumud Flotilla.
The solidarity movement with Palestine called for a protest against the Israeli attack on Wednesday on the Global Sumud Flotilla, a fleet of small vessels carrying medicines and food intended for the Gaza Strip (a region where Israel has blocked the entry of humanitarian aid).
The coordinator of Bloco de Esquerda, Mariana Mortágua, actress Sofia Aparício, and activists Miguel Duarte and Diogo Chaves were detained by Israel between Wednesday night and early today following the interception of the vessel they were aboard.
