The SNBP announced that participation in the strike called by the two trade union centers, CGTP and UGT, was unanimously approved at today’s meeting of the union’s General Council.
“The continuation of the current proposals by the Government will make the firefighting profession increasingly unattractive, jeopardizing the emergency response system – a direct detriment to the entire population,” stated the union led by Sérgio Carvalho.
In addition to opposing what it describes as the “generalization of job insecurity and instability,” the “destruction of collective bargaining,” and the “attack on the right to strike,” the SNBP demands, among other things, “wage increases for everyone,” the “right to risk allowance and recognition of the profession as high-stress,” and the “regulation of the entire firefighting and civil protection sector, with properly structured careers approved by all.”
The general strike on December 11th marks the first joint action by CGTP and UGT since June 2013, during Portugal’s ‘troika’ intervention.
