‘Prometheus Bound’ is the only Portuguese production at the Theatre Festival

The Festival’s program reveals that the play, produced by Teatro Livre, will be performed on July 26 at 8:00 PM at Teatro María Luisa. This venue will host seven of the seventeen plays in this edition, while the remaining ten will be staged at the Roman amphitheater.

“Prometheus Bound,” by Aeschylus, narrates the tale of a titan chained to a rock at sea, condemned by Zeus to eternal solitude.

Despite his isolation, Prometheus receives visits from nymphs, witches, and gods, some of whom support him, while others accuse him of stealing fire from Olympus and sharing it with humans on earth.

Alone at sea, Prometheus plans revenge against Zeus to break free from his imposed punishment.

“Prometheus Bound,” performed by Teatro Livre, is directed by Beto Coville, who also acts alongside António Camelier, Eurico Lopes, Luísa Ortigoso, and Sara Barradas.

With music by João Balão, lighting design by Pedro Santos, and costumes and accessories by Valentim Quaresma, the play premiered in July 2024 at the Roman Theater in Lisbon. It will be performed in Portuguese, with Spanish subtitles in Mérida.

Directed, as usual, by Jesús Cimarro, the festival extends to Madrid, Regina, and Medellín, opening with the play “Numancia,” a production by the Community of Madrid for Teatro del Canal, featuring 30 actors on stage.

“Oedipus Rex,” an Italian production by the Teatro di Roma Foundation, “Iphigenia,” “Cleopatra in Love,” “Electra,” and “Memories of Hadrian” are among the performances to be staged at the Festival.
