Santa Maria da Feira faced widespread damage throughout the municipality as a result of severe weather, with future assessments required to evaluate property damage, according to Mayor Vítor Marques.
“There are no casualties or injuries, but the situation was complicated overnight as water reached house levels, trees fell, and flooding occurred. The worst period was between 2:00 and 4:00 AM due to heavy rain and hail,” the mayor stated.
The councilor noted that teams, particularly from municipal works and green space management, are assessing the immediate needs of the population, logging incidents, and closing roads that need to be closed.
“A hill collapsed on a road in Sampaio de Oleiros, and the road is cut off. In the riverside areas, the water rose but is now under control. In the center of Santa Maria da Feira, at the lower Rossio area near dining establishments, it was also challenging. No preventive measure could contain this situation. We recorded falls of pieces of facades, mostly in vacant houses, and collapse of facades,” the mayor said.
On social media, the Municipality of Santa Maria da Feira offered several recommendations to residents, emphasizing that “all teams are mobilized to ensure everyone’s safety.”
“During the night, the municipality was hit by an extreme weather event with high-intensity rain and hail, resulting in multiple incidents in different areas. From the first moment, the Municipal Civil Protection Service and all civil protection agents have been on the ground monitoring the situations and providing all necessary support. Parish councils are also on standby to assist the population,” the statement reads.
