Protestors from the groups Assembleia da Graça – Parar o Hotel no Quartel and Movimento Referendo pela Habitação took to the streets of Lisbon this Sunday to demonstrate against “touristification.”
The initiative was part of an international protest movement against excessive tourism, with demonstrations occurring in Portugal, Spain, and Italy.
“We join the international call from the SET network – Southern Europe against Touristification to protest against the monoculture tourism policy that robs us of the city and to demand a Lisbon for those who live and work here,” the groups stated on social media.
During the protest, which began at the Church of Santo António and concluded at the Quartel da Graça, participants held a “procession of Saint Anthony evicted” because “in the current state of the city, not even the saints are spared from touristification.”
