Protocol on migration is “historic” if “bureaucracy doesn’t get in the way of it”

Luís Marques Mendes praised the cooperation protocol for labor migration, describing it as a “historic step” and an initiative with an unprecedented level of detail. However, he warned that it must not be hindered by an “excess of bureaucracy” that could “ruin it” or “kill it.”

The presidential candidate addressed journalists ahead of a conference titled “Portugal and the Future” at Nova SBE in Carcavelos, Lisbon. He was questioned about the labor migration cooperation protocol signed today between five business confederations and state entities, aimed at expediting the hiring of foreign citizens under specific conditions.

“The only thing I truly hope for is this: that the abundant bureaucracy in Portugal does not kill this beautiful agreement. I always emphasize this point because good ideas are great, good ideas on paper are excellent, but what truly matters is implementing good ideas economically and socially,” he stated.

Marques Mendes believes this step will “help reduce the tension surrounding the immigration topic” and will be “very beneficial economically,” addressing companies’ needs during a “phase of significant investments.”

“It is also very important from a less highlighted social perspective, as the proper integration of immigrants solves a social problem by ensuring immigrants are treated with the dignity they deserve,” he added.
