PS available in foreign and nationality laws: “It is up to the Government”

“In matters concerning the Constitutional Court’s rejection of the foreign laws and nationality law, the Socialist Party once again stood by its consistent position as a responsible party, ready to build humanistic solutions that comply with the Constitution,” asserted PS parliamentary leader Eurico Brilhante Dias, speaking to journalists after a meeting with the Government.

Eurico Brilhante Dias stated that he conveyed to the Government that “the options taken were wrong and unconstitutional, forming an alliance with the far-right,” and emphasized that it is up to the Government “to take the necessary steps for a better, responsible and humanistic law regarding foreigners and nationality.”

“It is up to the Government to decide whether to confine itself to a room to discuss these issues and close them with a far-right party or to take a responsible and constitutional approach,” he maintained.

The PS parliamentary leader highlighted that, particularly in the foreign law, the PS “is available to discuss” to achieve “a better law.”

“The option to legislate with Chega is a decision of the Government, not ours naturally,” he emphasized.

Another topic in these rounds of the Government’s meetings with parties in Parliament was foreign policy.

“The PS’s position is well known, which at this moment considers the step forward is the recognition of the State of Palestine,” he pointed out.

Eurico Brilhante Dias expressed to the Government the PS’s support for “the recognition of the State of Palestine also by the Portuguese State in the upcoming United Nations General Assembly.”
