“The official results from the municipal election for the Braga City Council have been confirmed, verifying the provisional counts and the victory of the coalition [PSD/CDS-PP/PPM] Juntos por Braga [led by João Rodrigues]. The PS/Braga acknowledges the electoral outcome with strict and absolute respect for democracy and the expressed will at the polls,” stated the socialist municipal committee today.
PS/Braga added that “it reaffirms its commitment to the people of Braga and ensures its presence in all municipal bodies for which it was elected,” continuing to uphold the ideas and proposals presented in its electoral program.
In a written statement sent to Lusa, António Braga, who led the coalition Somos Braga (PS/PAN), expressed “a profound pride in the proximity work” carried out throughout the campaign “in the streets, parishes, among people and institutions, listening, dialoguing, and building proposals for a fairer, more sustainable, and participatory city.”
António Braga and PS/Braga took the opportunity to congratulate the elected president, João Rodrigues, wishing him “good luck and success in the mandate now beginning, always with the hope that Braga continues to establish itself as an open, supportive, and forward-looking city.”
The coalition Juntos por Braga (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM), led by João Rodrigues, won the municipal elections on Sunday for the presidency of the Braga City Council with 26,378 votes, just 276 more than the votes received by the Somos Braga (PS/PAN) Coalition, headed by António Braga.
On Tuesday, the PS requested the recount and verification of results.
The coalitions led by PSD and PS each elected three councilors, the same number achieved by the independent movement Amar e Servir Braga, led by Ricardo Silva, who for the past 12 years has been the president of the Parish Council of São Victor, the largest in the municipality of Braga.
The 11-member city executive is completed with the election of Rui Rocha from IL and Filipe Aguiar from Chega.
