
“The Socialist Party has decided to cancel all campaign activities for the municipal elections throughout tomorrow, in respect of the national mourning declared for the tragedy that occurred today in Lisbon,” the party announced in a statement.
The Glória funicular in Lisbon derailed on Wednesday at 6:04 p.m. on Calçada da Glória.
The National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) reported the accident resulted in 15 fatalities and 18 injuries, with five critically injured and 13 sustaining minor injuries.
The government has declared a national day of mourning on Thursday.
The Glória funicular is operated by Carris and connects Restauradores to São Pedro de Alcântara Garden in Bairro Alto, covering a distance of approximately 265 meters. It is highly popular with tourists.
