PS Committee meets on the 5th for changes to the National Secretariat

The President of the PS, Carlos César, has convened a meeting, following the selection of José Luís Carneiro as the new Secretary-General of the party. The decision comes a week after Carneiro was chosen to succeed Pedro Nuno Santos, running unopposed in the internal elections.

The meeting agenda includes amendments to the National Secretariat and the review of the 2024 report and accounts.

On June 11, while still a candidate for leadership, Carneiro expressed that he intends to include “all those who wish to help” the PS during this “challenging time,” especially after Duarte Cordeiro and Alexandra Leitão announced their departure from the National Secretariat post-party leadership election.

“I said that I want to count on all those who want to help the Socialist Party at this challenging time, and I am convinced that we will have many leaders and officials accompanying the efforts being made,” Carneiro stated.

When pressed by journalists about potential concerns over a “shadow leadership” from these two figures, Carneiro dismissed the notion.

“In fact, Duarte Cordeiro has informed me that he has projects of another nature now, specifically professional projects, but I will count on him within the Socialist Party’s structures. I can say this as he expressed his availability himself, as did other colleagues,” he added, refraining from further comments on the matter.

José Luís Carneiro has today become the 10th Secretary-General of the PS, following Pedro Nuno Santos’s resignation after the electoral setback in the last legislative elections.

Based on the provisional results, with 92% of the votes counted and 27 sections remaining, José Luís Carneiro was elected Secretary-General of the PS with 95.4%, representing 17,214 votes, alongside 693 blank votes and 128 null votes.

The voter turnout for this election, where Carneiro was the sole candidate, was recorded at 48.3%.
