PS confirms support, Seguro takes “good note” but says he is “above parties”

The National Commission of the Socialist Party (PS) approved the support for António José Seguro in the presidential elections this Sunday, with two abstentions and the remaining votes in favor.

The proposal to support António José Seguro was presented by the Secretary-General of the Socialist Party and the President of the PS, José Luís Carneiro and Carlos César, respectively.

The party’s support for Seguro is based on the belief that he represents the solution most aligned with the concerns and values that drive citizens and movements identifying with democratic socialism, such as the Socialist Party.

Carneiro Praises Seguro

During a speech at the start of the PS National Commission meeting in Penafiel, the party’s Secretary-General, José Luís Carneiro, emphasized that Seguro “has proven his commitment to the democratic and constitutional values.”

“António José Seguro, besides having been the Secretary-General of the Young Socialists, was also the Secretary-General of our party. He has proven his commitment to democratic and constitutional values,” he stated, adding that “considering the special social and political times we are living in, only the response of democratic socialism can meet the fundamental demands of the values we uphold.”

Carlos César States He Is “the Best” for the PS

The President of the Socialist Party, Carlos César, also supported the view that António José Seguro is “the best” presidential candidate for the PS, explaining that with the approved support, the party “completes its role as an autonomous entity” in this election.

“The choice we must make is, looking at the candidates, to determine the best one. And, for the Socialist Party, the best is Dr. António José Seguro,” he argued when asked if Seguro was the ideal or possible candidate.

“What the Socialist Party approved today was formal support as an institution for one of the candidates, and this is where the Socialist Party completes its role as an autonomous entity in the presidential election. The rest of this presidential election is up to the candidates to declare their intentions and the citizens to choose based on what they see in the candidates,” he stated.

Seguro Grateful for Support, But Above Parties

The candidate himself stated that he acknowledges this proposal of support from the PS but reiterated that he has an “open candidacy,” as the President of the Republic should be “above the parties.”

“I take good note of this news, but I neither want nor should interfere in the internal affairs of political parties in Portugal. My candidacy was presented four months ago and has been garnering increasing support from the left, the right, the center, from people with no party affiliation, and that’s where I will continue,” he responded.

The presidential elections are scheduled for January 18 of next year.
