“Trust the candidates from the PS because, on the night of the 12th, even if they don’t achieve the majorities they hoped for, they will be the safeguard of these values we’ve been talking about here, and they will never side with those who want to attack democracy and the rule of law. This is the fundamental guarantee,” pledged José Luís Carneiro towards the end of his speech at the PS National Municipal Convention, marking the party’s ‘rentrée’.
The PS leader expressed regret over those who have allowed themselves to be “confused” by parties that attack democracy, implicitly criticizing the PSD in relation to Chega, though he refrained from naming the parties.
“But we are here, the PS is here to ensure all Portuguese that we will be true custodians of these fundamental values,” he promised.
Speaking at one point as “secretary-general of the PS and as the future Prime Minister of Portugal,” Carneiro committed to political work for a new local finance law and a new electoral law for local authorities.
