“We are going to file a new complaint with the National Election Commission (CNE) to once again emphasize the need for these practices to stop. These actions have legal implications, and this cannot continue to be a repeated practice,” stated Socialist deputy Pedro Vaz in a statement to Lusa news agency.
The issue involves the dispatch of a letter introducing Pedro Duarte as a candidate for the Porto City Council, reportedly sent to the city’s residents while Duarte continues to hold a position in the current government.
Pedro Vaz claims that “despite all the warnings, government members persist in using state mechanisms for electoral campaigning.”
“This has been a persistent practice among government members, who participate in governmental roles while engaging in party campaigns. They have already been warned by the CNE about elections yet continue with this behavior,” he remarked.
Thus far, the confirmed candidates for the Porto city council include Manuel Pizarro from the Socialist Party, Pedro Duarte from the Social Democratic Party, Diana Ferreira from the CDU, Nuno Cardoso representing Pensar o Porto, Vitorino Silva (known as Tino de Rans), and Aníbal Pinto from Nova Direita.
The current executive comprises six members from Rui Moreira’s independent movement, three from the Socialist Party, two from the Social Democratic Party, one from the CDU, and one from the Left Bloc.
Local elections are expected to take place between September 22 and October 14, 2025.
