Political debates are ongoing as part of the lead-up to the snap legislative elections set for May 18.
This Tuesday, a televised debate on TVI/CNN Portugal featured Pedro Nuno Santos and André Ventura. The secretary-general of the Socialist Party (PS) criticized the Chega party’s policies as irresponsible and unrealistic, accusing them of lacking the moral standing to offer criticism. Meanwhile, Ventura charged that Pedro Nuno Santos represents the worst of past governance.
Another debate saw Rui Rocha, leader of the Liberal Initiative (IL), face off against Inês Sousa Real, spokesperson for the People-Animals-Nature (PAN) party. While the two sparred over healthcare and taxation, they both expressed concern about sexual violence. A notable moment was when Rui Rocha criticized PAN for lacking an electoral program, describing it as “unfair competition.”
The legislative elections are scheduled for May 18 following the government’s collapse due to a failed confidence vote.
