PS leader confronted by Joana Amaral Dias in a tense moment

Pedro Nuno Santos commenced the 11th day of his campaign at the Livramento market in Setúbal, and a tense moment unfolded towards the end of his visit when he was confronted by Joana Amaral Dias, the head of the ADN list for Lisbon.

In an unexpected encounter within the market, Joana Amaral Dias shouted while following behind Pedro Nuno Santos, questioning him about travel subsidies. She inquired whether he had returned the funds to parliament, asserting that these subsidies were meant for “real trips,” and challenged him about whether he feared questions, insisting that “the people want to know,” accompanied by shouts of “PS, PS, PS” from the campaign crowd.

The socialist leader responded by urging “be serious” and accused her of lying, displaying visible irritation with the situation. Joana Amaral Dias trailed after him momentarily to a café counter, where several socialist supporters gathered around him.

Later, outside the market, Joana Amaral Dias was seen with three other supporters, smiling and wishing journalists “good work.”

In 2024, reports highlighted that the Secretary-General of PS allegedly received travel subsidies from parliament between 2005 and 2015, despite residing in Lisbon for a significant portion of that period.

At that time, Pedro Nuno Santos stated he “complied with all the rules” of the Assembly of the Republic and clarified that while his life was centered in São João da Madeira, Aveiro, the district for which he was elected as a deputy, Lisbon became his habitual residence after joining the first government of António Costa.

Earlier in his visit, Pedro Nuno Santos mingled with the market’s customers and vendors, handing out red roses. Addressing a pensioner who complained about a low pension and others receiving 600 euros without ever contributing, the socialist leader acknowledged that “reality is tough.”

“The reality for most is tough; this doesn’t mean there aren’t isolated cases of injustice, but most have worked hard and earn little,” he said, noting that “we cannot account for the stories of our people.”

Numerous individuals approached the PS Secretary-General with stories of low pensions, while also affirming their intention to vote for the socialists in the upcoming Sunday election.
