“What is at stake is which deputies the Madeirans want in the Assembly of the Republic,” stated the president of the PS regional structure, emphasizing the importance of resolving key issues that directly affect the lives of those in the region.
Paulo Cafôfo addressed journalists during the Regional Commission meeting of the party in Funchal, marking the start of preparations for upcoming electoral challenges, particularly the national legislative and municipal elections.
For the legislative elections on May 18, the socialist leader highlighted that the candidacy led by Emanuel Câmara, the current mayor of Porto Moniz in the north of the island, aims to “defend Madeira and its people.”
Cafôfo praised the “fighting spirit to defend the people above any interest” demonstrated by the socialist mayor, who is concluding his third consecutive term leading the Porto Moniz municipality, as well as by the other candidates.
“They are the right people, during this turbulent time in regional and national life, to defend the Madeirans,” he asserted.
The Autonomous Region of Madeira elects six deputies to the Assembly of the Republic, currently represented by three PSD members, two from the PS, and one from Chega.
Paulo Cafôfo also emphasized the significance of local governance, noting that “those who solve small problems, which are essentially big problems for the people, are the mayors and parish council presidents.”
The Madeira socialist leader assured that in the municipalities governed by the PS—Machico, Ponta do Sol, and Porto Moniz—”people live better” and the projects are more “ambitious.”
In the regional elections on March 23, which the PSD won without an absolute majority, the PS was surpassed by JPP, which elected 11 deputies, making it the third force in the Madeiran opposition with eight representatives.
