According to an official from the Socialist Party (PS), Secretary-General José Luís Carneiro is scheduled to meet with the parliamentary bench’s leadership late in the morning. This will be followed by a meeting with PS deputies at the Assembly of the Republic at 6:00 PM to discuss the party’s position on the OE2026, which they showed openness to approving during the electoral campaign.
Later in the evening, at Largo do Rato in Lisbon, the PS National Political Commission will convene to discuss the OE2026 budget and analyze the results of Sunday’s municipal elections.
In these municipal elections, the PS lost its status as the leading municipal force in Portugal, securing the presidency of 128 municipalities—two in coalition—down from 149 in 2021, one of which was also in coalition. This shift sees the PS losing the leadership of the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP) to the Social Democratic Party (PSD), failing again to win Lisboa and Porto.
Carneiro managed to curb the electoral decline of the PS after setbacks in the national elections, achieving the goal of increasing the number of district capitals won. Key victories included the wins in Évora, Faro, Coimbra, Bragança, and Viseu.
