PS postpones the National Municipal Convention marking the ‘rentrée’

“In light of the gravity of the tragic events that occurred in Lisbon, I have decided to postpone the PS Municipal Convention,” stated José Luís Carneiro, adding that, if logistical conditions allow, the convention should take place on September 13.

The Socialist Secretary-General mentioned that he made this decision, aware that “the mourning weighs on the national community and dramatically affects Lisbon, the grieving families of the deceased victims, and the families of the injured.”

“The causes of this tragedy must warrant an investigation of responsibilities, given that there is information pointing to, at the very least, negligent acts known to the highest officials,” he emphasized.

José Luís Carneiro reiterated condolences to the families and friends of the victims, as well as “to the diplomatic representations accredited in Portugal representing some of the nationalities that lost their lives in this tragic accident.”

The Prime Minister confirmed today that there are 16 dead and five critically injured from Wednesday’s accident with Lisbon’s Glória lift.

Luís Montenegro made a statement to the media without taking questions, following the Council of Ministers meeting, alongside the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, who participated in the final part of the meeting at the Prime Minister’s invitation.

The government declared a national day of mourning, observed today. Additionally, the Lisbon City Council declared three days of municipal mourning, from today until Saturday.
