Former Portuguese Minister Mariana Vieira da Silva, speaking at a rally in Aveiro alongside the leader of the Socialist Party (PS), José Luís Carneiro, asserted that the PS has consistently championed democratic local governance, noting this has been evident during the past eight years.
She highlighted that under the administration of António Costa, which she was a part of, local authorities have been granted “more competencies, more responsibilities, more financial resources, more investment opportunities,” as well as control over education, health, transportation, heritage, and social action.
“This is what impacts the daily lives of our citizens. That’s the path the PS chose. When it comes to these issues, local authorities should wield more power, and there isn’t a local leader in this country who doesn’t acknowledge this effort,” she stated.
The PS deputy insisted that the party truly makes a difference when leading municipalities.
“It’s through close interaction with citizens, making a difference every day. And that’s precisely what Aveiro needs at this moment,” she said, endorsing socialist candidate Alberto Souto.
According to Mariana Vieira da Silva, Aveiro “requires the energy of those who know what needs to be done and how to do it.”
Her initial remarks were directed at her former government colleague, present PS leader José Luís Carneiro.
“We see you everywhere in the country at all times, not knowing when you rest. What we do know is that you are doing what the PS needs, to be present in all municipalities, supporting all our candidates fiercely until victory on the 12th,” she praised.
José Luís Carneiro, upon taking the stage, responded by thanking her and asserting, “Those who run with passion never tire.”
“I want to say that I am passionate about serving our ideals and values,” he emphasized.
He described it as “truly inspiring” and “an honor to lead the PS at such a crucial phase.” He underscored, “It is from democratic local governance that we aim to position the PS where it belongs—a leader in freedom, equality, and fraternity in Portugal.”
