PS says it is the biggest spender in elections because it has the most local councils.

“The PS will have more investment because it holds more municipalities, thus the level of investment in municipalities reflects the number of councils political parties hold,” stated José Luís Carneiro at the start of the Autarchic Commitment of the Porto Metropolitan Area signing event in Trofa, Porto district.

The socialist made these remarks when questioned by journalists regarding today’s report by Rádio Renascença (RR), which revealed that PS will lead in spending—either independently or in coalition—in 30 of the 50 constituencies with the largest electorate. Meanwhile, the PSD—alone or in coalition with CDS, IL, or other parties—has the highest budget in 14 of the major upcoming electoral races.

José Luís Carneiro clarified that PS governs 152 councils, 148 won without any coalition, and four supported with candidates through coalitions or as independents.

“Being the largest party in local municipalities, it also benefits from more substantial investment levels, as this investment is tied to state contributions based on the number of votes in municipal councils, assemblies, and parishes,” he concluded.

When questioned about the new version of the emigrant law presented on Wednesday by the Minister of the Presidency, José Luís Carneiro refrained from commenting, stating only that “some wish to turn this into a municipal issue,” which he does not intend to do.
